A water storage tank is an essential piece of equipment for your water well pump system. The water tank must be the proper size for the size of the pump and for the demand put on the tank. A steel water storage tank have an average life span of 12-15 years and a fiberglass tank has a life span of 3-5 years.
These diaphragm tanks need to have proper maintenance just as does any mechanical device. With regular maintenance the proper air charge can be maintained extending the life of the tank. When tanks go unattended, over time they lose air pressure making the diaphragm that’s inside extend and stretch further than what is ideal ultimately causing tears and failures.
When a water storage tank fails the pump system will still deliver water but a failed tank will ultimately ruin a water pump. Without a working tank on the system the well pump will turn on and off rapidly causing premature failure of the pump.
